Cable cleats are one of those components that often get underspecified — treated as simple holding clips rather than the safety-critical structural components they actually are. The reality is that during a short circuit, the electromagnetic forces generated between adjacent single-core cables can be violent enough to tear cables from their supports, bend cable ladders, and cause secondary faults, fires, or explosive failures. Properly rated cable cleats are what prevent that from happening.

At AMROCK, we manufacture FRP cable cleats — also called fibreglass cable clamps or GRP cable retaining cleats — that are tested as per latest standards that govern cable cleat performance under short-circuit electromagnetic forces. Our cleats are non-conductive, fully corrosion resistant, and available in two-bolt and trefoil types .

Why Cable Cleats Are a Safety-Critical Component

During a short circuit, the fault current flowing through adjacent single-core cables creates a magnetic field interaction that generates a physical force trying to push the cables apart or together — depending on formation and phase arrangement. The magnitude of this force can be enormous at high fault current levels. Without adequate cable cleats for short-circuit retention, cables can move hundreds of millimetres in milliseconds, breaking insulation, contacting earthed steelwork, and extending what should be a contained fault into a much more serious incident.

Types of FRP Cable Cleats

Two-Bolt FRP Cable Cleat

For larger cables and for installations where fault currents create significant EMF. The dual-bolt design provides superior retention against both lateral and axial forces.

Trefoil FRP Cable Cleat

Trefoil cable cleats hold three single-core cables in the trefoil formation — cables touching in a triangle arrangement — which is the standard HV cable installation formation. Trefoil formation minimises inductive reactance and balances the electromagnetic forces on the cleat from all three phases.
